Course Description

  • Electric charge - Coulomb’s law - Conductors and insulators. Electric field and electric forces - Electric dipoles - Gauss law and electric flux.
  • Electric potential – electric potential energy – equipotential surfaces – cathode ray tube.
  • Capacitors - capacitance – dielectrics – capacitors in series and parallel – electric field energy.
  • Electric current – current density – resistance – resistivity – electromotive force – internal resistance.
  • Energy and power in electric circuits – resistors in series and parallel.
  • Kirchhoff’s rules – circuit’s with resistors and capacitors.
  • Magnetic field – magnetic poles – magnetic forces on moving charges – magnetic field  lines – magnetic flux – magnetic force on a conductor carrying a current – force and torque on a current loop.
  • Magnetic field of a moving charge - magnetic field of a current element – magnetic field of a straight current carrying conductor – force between parallel current carrying conductors – magnetic field of a circular current loop.
  • Electromagnetic induction – Faraday’s law – Lenz’s law – motional electromotive force – induced electric fields.
  • Inductance – mutual inductance – self inductance – inductors as circuit elements – magnetic field energy – R-L circuit – L-C circuit and electrical oscillations – L-R-C series circuit.
  • Alternating current – phasor diagrams – resistor in AC circuit – inductor in AC circuit – capacitor in AC circuit – L-R-C series circuit  - power in alternating current circuits.
  • L-R-C parallel circuit – transformers – electromagnetic waves and Maxwell equations – speed of light - energy and momentum of electromagnetic waves.
  • Electromagnetic spectrum – traveling waves and standing waves – nature of light – rainbows – blue sky – red sunset.
