De Montfort University Graduate School Full Bursary PhD Scholarship

Title of Project: Deep Learning and Cognitive Techniques for Big Gait Data Analysis

Context, Intelligence and Interaction Research Group (CIIRG)

School of Computer Science and Informatics (SCSI), Faculty of Technology

De Montfort University, Leicester

COMMENCING July 2018 or the earliest after

A PhD research scholarship including stipend and tuition fee costs is offered within the CIIRG Research Group in the School of SCSI. It is available to the UK, EU and overseas students who are suitably qualified and have outstanding potential as a researcher.

In offering this scholarship the University aims to further develop its proven research strengths in the areas of computational intelligence, context computing, smart human-machine systems, cognitive behavior analysis, and their applications in smart healthcare, active and healthy ageing. It is an excellent opportunity for a candidate of exceptional calibre to contribute to a stimulating, world-class research environment.

Project outline
The Internet of things and smart devices have been increasingly used to monitor human behaviour. By extracting the behaviour patterns and the changes of behaviour it is possible to infer a person’s health status or the change of medical conditions such as chronic diseases, thus helping people maintain wellbeing or carry out self-care. Gait analysis is intended to achieve this aim by analysing the way people walk. This project will address the drawbacks and knowledge gap of the existing gait analysis research by developing deep learning algorithms for gait pattern recognition, and machine learning methods to establish correlations between gait characteristics and selected medical conditions. In addition, the project will investigate decision making support for health and care self-management based on cognitive modelling of the selected medical condition. The project will be undertaken in collaboration with an industrial collaborator who will provide smart shoes for collecting gait data and also big gait datasets.

For a more detailed description of the research areas at DMU and an application pack please visit http://www.dmu.ac.uk/research/graduate-school/phd-scholarships.aspx. Please direct project queries to Prof Liming Chen on +44 (0)116 2078490 or email liming.chen@dmu.ac.uk For administrative queries contact the Graduate School office email: researchstudents@dmu.ac.uk, tel: 0116 250-6309.  Completed applications should be returned together with two supporting references and an academic transcript.

Applications are invited from the UK, EU and overseas students with a Master’s degree or good first degree in a relevant subject (First, 2:1 or equivalent).  Doctoral scholarships are available for up to three years full-time study commencing in July 2018 consisting of a bursary of £14,296 per annum in addition to waiver of tuition fees. Please note that the scholarship only covers the value of home/EU fees, overseas applicants would have to arrange to pay the difference between the home/EU and overseas fees.
