The Department of Informatics Engineering of the Technological Educational Institute of Crete was established in 1999 under the name “Department of Applied Informatics and Multimedia” and it accepted its first students in September 1999. Under the Official Government Gazette A. 137/5-6-13 the Department was renamed to Department of Informatics Engineering belonging to the School of Engineering, located in Heraklion; in the latter semesters students can choose among the following fields of specialization:
- Network engineering
- Computer engineering
- Software engineering
The Department of Informatics Engineering, TEI of Crete covers the field of Informatics, Telecommunications and Multimedia, areas that play a significant role in the newly established Society of Information. It is a particularly active and ambitious Department, which aims at training the future Informatics Engineers by providing them with the necessary knowledge, skills and experiences that will make them skilled and high-qualified future executives, who will serve the technology of Informatics, Telecommunications and Multimedia.
The provided training of the Department aims at creating graduates, who shall have a thorough understanding of new technologies plus the required special skills that will help them meet directly the needs of a really large and constant growing labour market. This labour market includes enterprises and companies involved in products of applied Informatics, software companies, Internet service providers, telecommunications operators, etc.
A Graduate Informatics Engineer of Technological Education shall have the necessary knowledge to fully develop (design, install, maintain and support) information systems and telecommunications networks. The study programme has been designed in a way that not only fulfils the needs of today’s labour market but also enables its graduates to address the modern challenges of the rapidly evolving technologies of Informatics and Telecommunications in the best possible way, yet with the necessary flexibility.
