Rethymnon is the seat of the Municipality and the capital of the Prefecture of Rethymnon. It is situated in the Northern coast of Crete, in the eastern side of the gulf of Almyrou. It’s the third largest in population urban center of Crete after Heracklion and Chania. It is the administrative, commercial and transportation center of the Prefecture of Rethymnon.
The City of Rethymnon is a very interesting destination. The picturesque and very well organized city constitutes a haven for visitors who want to have tranquility, taking strolls in the picturesque streets or enjoying the archaeological and natural monument routes of the region. The old City of Rethymnon has preserved in great part its urban fabric, in the way that it was formulated during the Venetian Conquest, the changes brought by the Turkish Invasion and the constant habitation until this day. It has been declared a Historical Preserved Monument and Traditional Settlement.
