Agios Nikolaos

Agios Nikolaos is the capital of the Prefecture of Lasithi and it is situated in the Northern coastline of Crete, in the Western side of the gulf of Merambelo.  It’s Name is derived from the Byzantine Church located in the bay of Agios Nikolaos.

The current city is built in the position of ancient Lato towards Kamara, seaport of Latous Eteras (important Dorian mountain town, 3,5 Km North of Kritsa). The two cities constituted an administrative unity in the 3 BC, they worshiped the same deity, Eileithyia, protector of childbirth and they had single currencies that depicted in one side Eileithyia or Artemis and the other Hermes.  The Citizens of Latous towards Kamara called themselves Kamarites.
